The University of Sudbury celebrates National Aboriginal Day

On Wednesday, June 21st, 2017, University of Sudbury employees celebrated National Aboriginal Day with a workshop on bannock bread.

The workshop was offered by Sharon Gauthier, who was accompanied by her spouse, Denis Lefebvre. Sharon is from the Algonquin First Nation in Mattawa and has worked with the University of Sudbury for many years, sharing her teachings with high school students through the University’s cultural sensitivity workshops. She explained how to prepare bannock bread, and the different variations. Her husband Denis, who is a fire keeper, offered teachings about fire.

Participants were able to prepare and cook their own bannock bread over the fire, and savour the end product with some maple syrup.
