Father Meehan succeeds Dr. Sophie Bouffard and has occupied the position of President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sudbury (UofS) since September 12, 2019. Upon his arrival, he began “Thirty Days of Listening” and surveyed members of the university community to better understand the realities, including strengths, challenges, opportunities and needs. He expressed how much of a privilege it is for him to serve our university community which is, to some degree, a microcosm of Canada with its deeply rooted tri-cultural and bilingual aspects. He is passionate about the institution’s Jesuit tradition of educating the whole person. With students always at the forefront, he will focus on the notion of Cura Personalis (care of the entire person) as well as themes such as community, diversity and reconciliation, amongst others.

Before assuming the President’s duties at the UofS, Father Meehan was rector of L’Église de Gesù and Interim Director of the Newman Center at McGill University. Prior to this, he was President of Campion College, the Jesuit university college federated with the University of Regina. An author, lecturer and multilingual intellectual, he has a breadth of experience, notably in the areas of education, history and external relations. Read more about his background HERE.

Those who spoke at the ceremony expressed delight to be able to work with Father Meehan, a down-to-earth, approachable and sincere individual who inspires hope. The University proudly welcomes Fr. Meehan. His breadth of experience paired with his strong skillset will no doubt ensure a strong leadership of our bilingual, tri-cultural, humanities-based institution rooted in Jesuit tradition.
